Rob Johnson Progresses to Operations Manager at YMCA Lakeside

We are pleased to share the progression of Rob Johnson into the role of Operations Manager, following his successful completion of a two-year Level 5 Operations Manager Apprenticeship.

Rob began his journey with us as a seasonal outdoor instructor and has developed his career within the organisation by combining hands-on experience with formal study. The apprenticeship, delivered in partnership with Kendal College, saw Rob balance his role at YMCA Lakeside with attending college two days a month, allowing him to apply his learning directly to our day-to-day operations.

Our centre is located on the shores of Windermere, surrounded by old woodland and the Lakeland hills, and this natural setting plays a central role in the experience we offer. Being outdoors is a key part of working life at YMCA Lakeside and a major draw for both staff and visiting groups.

Some of Rob’s stand out moments reflect his love of water sports and a previous role as our senior sailing instructor. He says, one such time is on a brilliant summer’s day when there can be up to 15 groups of young people out on the lake, all active busy and learning. Seeing large numbers of children and young people outdoors and enjoying themselves is a defining part of what we do here.

Many of the young people who visit YMCA Lakeside are taking part in outdoor activities for the first time. From paddling on Windermere to working together as part of a group, our programmes are designed to build confidence, encourage teamwork and support wellbeing through shared outdoor experiences.

Like many of our team, Rob values the practical, active nature of outdoor work. Rather than a traditional desk-based role, much of the working day takes place on the lake, in woodland or across the surrounding landscape. This “no-desk” approach supports a physically active lifestyle and a strong connection to the natural environment.

Instructors at YMCA Lakeside are passionate about supporting memorable and sometimes life-changing experiences, whether that means guiding a first paddle session or leading a more challenging hike.

In his new role as Operations Manager, Rob now oversees staff rotas, coordinates schools’ programmes and supports the day-to-day running of the centre. At the height of full season this involves managing operations for up to 200 children, working alongside 32 instructors, and coordinating teams across catering, housekeeping, stores, bookings, sales and facilities.

Rob’s progression reflects our commitment at YMCA Lakeside to developing staff through structured training and clear progression routes, while continuing to deliver high-quality outdoor learning experiences for young people.
